Leadership Lessons of Jesus: A Timeless Model for Today's Leaders : Book - Hardcover (161 pages) Awarded 4.5/5.0 of our 5
I have been on a pursuit of studying the greatest managers and leaders throughout time, and this book along with Bob Brinerís other book, ìThe Management Methods of Jesusî started my quest. After reading both books, I began to study history's greatest leaders. After nearly 75 books, biographies, stories and accounts this past year, none compare to Jesus. This book is full of practical ìreal-lifeî situations that every leader will face on subjects such as: authority, unity, special relationships, expectations, publicity, vision, boldness, etc. To use this book most effectively, I would DEFINITELY BUY IT, read it once a week for 4 to 6 weeks; then take one point per week (which there are 52 total) and intently focus on learning, then applying it moment by moment. I promise you, this book will also change your life!!! EVERY MANAGER NEEDS THIS BOOK Christian or not!

I have been on a pursuit of studying the greatest managers and leaders throughout time, and this book along with Bob Brinerís other book, ìThe Leadership Lessons of Jesusî started it all. After reading ìThe Management Methods of Jesus,î I sought to see how many leaders throughout time compared to Jesusí and His methods. After nearly 75 books, biographies, stories and accounts this past year, none compare. This book is full of practical ìreal-lifeî situations that every manager, entrepreneur or business leader faces daily - but Jesus did them all perfect. In very, very short segments, Briner covers specifically what Jesus did on subjects such as: being a risk taker, worry, servant hood, preparing for tough times, establishing authority, recruiting, correcting a follower, planning, and so much more. To use this book most effectively, I would DEFINITELY BUY IT, read it once a week for 4 to 6 weeks; then take one point per week and intently focus on applying it how Jesus did. It will change your life!!! EVERY MANAGER NEEDS THIS BOOK Christian or not!

In addition to the paper version comments above, I have listened to the audio book version as well. Personally, I find the audio version MUCH easier to digest and more memorable due to it's "gather around the campfire story" style setting that is "acted" out with different character voices. It is simply a fabulous overview of indistinguishable characteristics of a great leader in history. Attila faced nearly every problem you, I or any organization has or will ever face - but on a "national" large scale with his successes still etched in history to this day.

The Way of the Warrior : Business Tactics and Techniques from History's Twelve Greatest Generals : Book - Paperback (207 pages) Awarded 4.5/5.0 of our 5
EXCELLENT BOOK FOR THE MANGER that walks you through the primary, distinguishable characteristic of each of history's great 12 Warriors: Alexander the Great and having vision; Genghis Khan and the speed of quick decisions; Julius Caesar and communication; Napoleon's ability to manage change; Ulysses S. Grant and the ability to initiate turnaround; Douglas Macarthur and coping with disaster; Norman Schwarzkopf's ability to build alliances, Edward I and many more "Warriors." In business, the battlefield is really the marketplace and the "enemy" is your competitors. That aside, the book allows you to draw many "real life" self conclusions about your own ability to lead within your organization. My suggestion, read this book, focus on one small chapter per week (or month), and sincerely delve into (and analyze) the distinguishable characteristic of that "Warrior." Objectively evaluate your organization on that specific leadership trait (i.e.. communication, etc) and then implement positive changes. If you read it all strait through as I did, it's tempting to miss some of the key points - so take your time. Overall, I particularly enjoy the fact that he gives "just enough" factual data at the beginning of each Warrior's segment, so you can understand what their situation is, then what they did about it and why history recorded their triumph. Bottom line, to win involves strategically aligned thinking, and application - in both business and war. If history recorded their achievements because of their personal characteristics, then learn to use what already works and why.

The Founding Fathers on Leadership : Classic Teamwork in Changing Times : Book - Paperback (264 pages) Awarded 4.0/5.0 of our 5
He "re-builds" the American Revolutionary War in a David vs. Goliath setting giving his readers a riveting account of the leadership and management skills of America's Founders can translate into great business success too. It truly gives you a deep appreciation of the "melding" of the various Founders and their personalities - what it took to work together. He organizes the book in four key sections: preparation; mobilization / motivation; victory; and post - victory. I was luck to find an audio version (7 cass / 10 hours / unabridged read by Nelson Runger) but believe it is no longer available. I do recall, however, he gives a brief synopsis of the "main players" and the their qualities of leadership before the chapter, then a brief summary at the end of each chapter incase you missed it. Here they are: "treating people with respect and dignity; raising awareness; creating a vision and involving others; bonding together through alliances and teamwork; risking all; learning from mistakes; refusing to lose; inspiring rather than coercing; listening; compromising; caring; ever changing and ever achieving." If you're in management, and love America, you'll LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

It's a tale of the 16th-century monarch who re-built the English nation. I listened to the audio version and like the Narrator (Nelson Runger's style), though it was somewhat difficult to follow the Author's precise historical benchmark because he jumped around a lot, the principles of leadership and management were pretty good. In a nutshell, here's my version of what she did that made her so successful: "look" like a leader that creates, then unifies and builds loyal staff around a vision while growing and "crushing the competition" - ultimately achieving success without excuses. A little more detailed than that with 100+ principles packed in - so read it. Overall, I thought it was good. Be sure to take it in small morsels and take the time to evaluate how it applies to your organization - don't read it for a chronological history lesson though. A GREAT RESOURCE FOR A MANAGER!

Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun : Book - Paperback (110 pages) Awarded 4.0/5.0 of our 5
I have read the "Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun" and it's simply excellent! In fact, this particular title rose to national popularity after Ross Perot was mailed a "complimentary" copy by Wes Roberts after writing the book. Perot found its principles so valuable, he ordered one for every employee in his organization - and it took off from there. Attila was a man that shaped history and merged various clans of mercenary tribal nomads into undisputed, conquerors of the ancient world challenging Rome. His success was built on the timeless lessons of leadership, motivation, management, building and maintaining a successful organization, decision making, delegating, negotiating, communication, discipline, and MUCH more. Well worth the time and a MUST READ FOR THE MANAGER OR LEADER!

Patton On Leadership: Strategic Lessons For Corporate Warfare : Book - Hardcover (279 pages) Awarded 4.0/5.0 of our 5
AN EFFECTIVE MANAGER'S HANDBOOK! This book (I would highly suggest the audio version) was simply awesome! Patton does use occasional profanity to punctuate a sentence here and there - so be forewarned, but the principles are awesome! The book starts as a gradual traipse through his career beginnings, and the struggles he began with of dyslexia, West Point difficulties, to successfully competing in the Olympics, fencing, tank school, and more. However, it was his perseverance and pursuit of excellence that led to his success; especially on the battlefield. He was very quick to lead from beside his men and not rule over them like a Dictator with respect that was earned. He says ìsuccess in war depends on the golden rule of war: speed, simplicity, and boldness.î The same holds true for the business battlefield too. ìVictory of the next war will be won on execution, not plans. Not the WHAT of the plan, but the HOW.î Bottom line, ìleadership or success is 95% follow through.î Itís a compact, 183 "Strategic Lessons" within ten chapters perfectly organized on subjects like: "Always Attack, Never Surrender" (On Developing a Winning Attitude); "Speed -- Simplicity -- Boldness" (On Execution and Opportunity); "Only One Direction -- Forward" (On Creating Efficiency) and so much more! These are just a couple of gems I foundÖ READ THIS BOOK - Youíll get a ton out of it!!!!

Success Is a Choice : Ten Steps to Overachieving in Business and Life : Book - Paperback (275 pages) Awarded 4.0/5.0 of our 5
This book bears great merit for me, and definitely will for you. Hereís why: Itís not only simple to read (or listen to in my case), but practical, and motivational to hitting you all the way to the core. Why do you do what you do and get those results? According to Pitino, success really isÖa choice. Itís very good at helping you to distinguish the difference between a goal, dream, etc. where most of the world use those words interchangeably. The key, help others ALSO achieve their goals - first. His success in basketball (or any life situation) is to be committed to making the choice to succeed first, then to be the hardest working ìteamî (or in your case, salesman, marketer, etc) out there. His principles really work - I know firsthand! This is one of the best ìhow toî books out there!

The ìTen Commandments of Successî is packed with practical, bite size morsels of the principles of success. Throw in the Ten Commandments, and it sounds like a basic premise for a book on success with a Moses twist. However, the distinct power is Belasco's ability to communicate the value of building successful leadership that simultaneously builds heart in an organization - and leave a legacy. Thereís lots of common sense wisdom in the ìTen Commandments of Success!î Though I listened to this one only once, it made such a positive impact on me, that I desire to revisit it a few more times and continue to ìbe a student.î

Management Mess-Ups: 57 Pitfalls You Can Avoid (And Stories of Those Who Didn't) : Book - Paperback (256 pages) Awarded 4.0/5.0 of our 5
The phrase "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" really fits the theme of this book. The problem however, is that most managers aren't capable to recognize when "it's broke," but tend to react to the symptoms. Forget being able to correctly diagnose and repair the real problem. Can a Dentist diagnose what's wrong with an aircraft engine? Unless he's been trained in that field, probably not because he doesn't know what he's looking for. Sometimes, we're too close to the project to look at it objectively. Adaptability and the skill of learning from the past is one of the most critical skills an effective manager needs in today's fast paced, lean organizations. Due to it's nature, I think the best way to read this book, is to read and study one "mess up" per week, and intently look through your organization and see if you find that "mess up" anywhere - then clean them up and don't repeat it. Then go to the next one. Here in lies a roadmap of WHAT to avoid - BUY IT, READ IT, USE IT to become a better manager.

Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation : Book - Hardback (288 pages) Awarded 3.5/5.0 of our 5
Ellis carefully constructs six individual stories of political significance delving into the Founding Brotherís character, beliefs, convictions and actions that later structured the United States. This book, for me, showed the significant value for unity in spite of the overwhelming personality differences of Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Hamilton, Franklin, Madison, Burr, etc. had, and how the WORKED TOGETHER to overcome those differences; eventually birthing a nation. In effect, the issues they dealt with (and those they chose to ignore, like slavery which later led to the Civil War) did more to carve history than they did as individuals making their distinct mark upon history - they were just along for the ride but it was HOW they handled it, and WHY we remember in history. Youíll love this one as you traipse through the pages and the various personality types will automatically remind you of individuals within your organization; but remember the value of interpersonal relationships and communication working together for a common good. An excellent book to read (or listen to) for ANYONE!.

The Deal Maker: How William C. Durant Made General Motors : Book - Hardcover (310 pages) Awarded 3.0/5.0 of our 5
Itís a story of a vibrant, fast acting dreamer named William Durant who had his start making horse carriages in Flint, Michigan with his partner Dort. He being the salesman, they pre-sold orders for their carriages at a fair, contracted the work out, then worked in a frenzy to fulfill all those orders. It wasnít long until those working on the carriages understood what Durant and Dort were doing, and wanted their own piece of the pie. With a little luck, they managed to survive intense start up competition the first few fragile years, then, in 1908, Durant established General Motors through the strategic acquisition (and even more luck) of several existing auto manufacturers (including Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac). He also actively pursued vertical and horizontal integration into the manufacturing process by acquiring rubber plantations, etc. at the closest level to the source. Itís fascinating to listen to the ìwhoî behind the names of todayís leading auto lines (ie. Louie ìChevroletî - was a race car driver that partnered with Durant), etc. and to imagine that Henry Ford and William Durant considered a viable merger that would have completely changed the auto industry! From a financial standpoint now, itís easy to see Durantís repeated pattern for financial ruin. It was his tremendous speed and passion which he acted, but often lacked methodical planning or prudence. His pursuit of being ìbigî and acquiring at least one new company every month, led to a repeated pattern of over-extension and debt that fed his ego; which eventually ruined him, not once, but three times! He then became involved with Dupont, Morgan and the other ìhigh poweredî names of history in an effort to re-build his own auto "empire" with a different name - each failed. Each time, his persistence kept him going - and thatís truly admirable; especially at that level. He never gave up after each failure! Itís inspiring to read (or listen to if you get lucky and find an audio version.)

I heard about this book on a radio talk show. The author was deemed ìan expertî when the Monica Lewinski trials were going on - so I thought Iíd evaluate his methods and listened to the audio book. It does include some tested ideas that ìmayî work in theory as you learn to read body language, facial expressions, sentence structure, and word choice - but be careful! I am, for example, an audio learner. I learn best if I hear something. Audio learners have a tendency to glance down while conversing and break eye contact to remember facts, pertinent data, etc (while visual learners look upwards). I have been wrongly accused of ìlyingî because I glanced downward to access my audio memory bank in my brain recalling facts nearly word for word. A word of caution - this is NOT the Gospel of getting to the truth for everyone! Overall, the book is a very simple read, and is actually pretty fun; especially when you have a hot shot sales person trying to sell you something and you can read them and what they ìreallyî think. On the flip side, imagine the value for the sales staff to know and be able to apply this as from the other side as well. For me personally, it was very useful in my previous business because I could ìreadî the body language, facial expressions, sentence structure, etc and root out objections faster and more effectively in the customer before they even brought them up. In the end, IT HELPED MAKE ME MORE EFFICIENT IN SALES!

Al Dunlap, CEO of Scott Paper, justly deserved his nickname ìChainsaw Alî for his direct, brash style of corporate turnaround. His style was that of an uncompassionate, focused cost cutter - but proved to be very effective. For example, rather than keep employees walking on eggshells pondering if they'd face a potential layoff, eventually lessen productivity, string out costs, and breed mistrust, heíd simply layoff the forecasted total in the beginning of a turnaround, re-structure his team, then be done with it. He seemed to have a pattern that slashed the visible ìporkî first by moving elaborate corporate headquarters to a modest location and build a lean functioning machine. His ultimate loyalty and motivation was solely aligned to fulfilling the same interest of the shareholder - period. He knew if he did that and cut costs, heíd be very successful - and he wasÖto the tune of earning $100 million in 18 short months! What I enjoyed most, is his focus on accountability and rewards. He went as far as to heavily leverage employee compensation to the organizationís stock performance. That being said, I admired what he did, and his methods were effective, but I didnít care for the tone of Dunlap in this book at all! Combine this with the Readerís tone in the audio version, he came across as a bad attitude ìmafia gangsterî personality continually taunting his own ego. The book almost seemed to be written as a guilt therapy assignment trying to ìjustifyî how much money he made in 18 months. If you can get past the ìin your faceî tone, there are many great principles to effective turnaround, cutting costs, compensation, accountability, rewards and management. These principles made it worth it for me, and yes, I'd listen to it again.

How to Delegate Work and Ensure it's Done Right : Audio Tape Book (Abridged) (2 cass) Awarded 1.5/5.0 of our 5
From an audio version perspective, itís dry. Personally, the content was good for the beginner to mid-level manager learning to delegate, but the experienced manager whoís role is to frequently delegate will find it boring and ìtooî basic. There are good, practical points to build from - so learn those well and apply them.
