The state of the American worker has declined.
In Daniel Pink’s book, “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us,” he talks about how the average American worker feels disengaged, demotivated, and dis-empowered; even disconnected.
According to Pink,“over 50 percent of U.S. workers are not engaged. Twenty percent are actually disengaged at a cost of over $300 billion annually in lost productivity. This is the equivalent of the GDP of Portugal, Singapore or Israel. In fact, according to researchers McKinsey and Company, only two to three percent of the U.S. workforce is ‘highly engaged.’”
A recent Gallup poll on the State of the American Workplace statistically found that 70% of American workers simply aren’t engaged in their work. Highly educated workers are the least engaged. Gallup notes that “engaged workers are more productive, more profitable, more customer focused, safer and more likely to remain with their employers. Actively disengaged employees erode an organization’s bottom line while breaking the spirits of colleagues in the process at a cost of more than three hundred billion dollars in lost productivity.” WOW!
According to Shawn Anchor, a Harvard professor, “Nearly every company in the world gives lip service to the idea of our people are the greatest asset,” yet in a recent survey by the New York Conference Board think tank (2010), only 45 percent of American workers are satisfied with their jobs conversely, 61 percent in 1987.
Only half of the workforce found their work interesting, while 70% did in 1987. That’s a huge decline!
Okay. Enough statistics. The point is, workers want to engage. They want to be challenged. They want to belong and contribute to something bigger than themselves. They want to be part of a team.
